Is a Wedding Celebrant a necessity for a Wedding Ceremony?

I was recently contacted by a bride to be, who was not entirely sure what a celebrant is or does. She had heard the term ‘Celebrant’ but after explaining to her what my role is she asked ‘but is a celebrant a necessity?’.

Currently a Celebrant is NOT a necessity for a wedding ceremony. We are a wedding supplier who can help make your service, a bespoke, individual and magical experience.

Why choose a Wedding Celebrant then?

A celebrant helps create memories, in the heart and mind, so that you and your guests will remember your wedding ceremony forever.

A celebrant takes time to get to know you, learns about your love journey and makes that the main focus of your wedding ceremony. Its about making your ceremony as special as you are. I do not use a pre-prepared script and just insert your names, and I’m not super strict on timings. Many celebrants only book one wedding per day, so if there are any last minute nerves, or a technical issue, we are not cutting your service short, to rush to our next appointment.

We do not have to conduct your service at a ‘licensed venue’. In fact, with the landowners permission we can conduct your service anywhere you wish, and at any time. Sunset ceremony anyone??

Currently if you wish to be ‘legally’ Wed You would need to attend a registry office and receive your legal documentation by having a 10 minute service with 2 witnesses, to sign the documentation. This can be done at some point before your celebrant led service or in the days afterwards, (there is no time limit on this), it’s a similar process to registering a death or birth and can be considered to be purely administrative.

Some couples have the registrar attend their chosen licensed wedding venue on the morning of their ceremony, before they get ready for their Celebrant Led ceremony.

What does the future hold?

This process will hopefully change with the Wedding Reform which is currently awaiting debate in parliament, recommendations to update this include qualified Celebrants being given the licence to legally marry couples, with the onus being on accessible weddings for all.
